Setapp vs Mac App Store: Where to get USB Connection Information
USB Connection Information is coming to Setapp's new Standalone store. Learn the differences between the Mac App Store and Setapp, and which is right for you.
Starting May 2026, USB Connection Information will be available on Setapp, giving you a new way to purchase and install the app outside of the Mac App Store.
If you’re wondering which platform is right for you, here is a quick breakdown of the differences and why we are excited to join the Setapp ecosystem.
Setapp’s new Standalone store
It’s important to note that we are launching on Setapp’s Standalone store. This is a new offering from MacPaw that allows users to purchase apps individually.
USB Connection Information is not currently included in the Setapp monthly subscription. Purchasing it through the Standalone store is a one-time transaction, exactly like the Mac App Store. The pricing remains exactly the same for the customer regardless of which storefront you choose.
Curated vs. Open Market
One of the biggest differences between the two platforms is scale and curation:
- The Mac App Store hosts approximately 2.5 million apps. It’s the default, built-in choice for macOS.
- The Setapp store is highly curated, featuring only about 250 hand-picked applications known for their quality and utility.
We are incredibly proud that USB Connection Information has been selected to be part of this exclusive, curated collection.
Why choose Setapp over the Mac App Store?
For most personal users, the Mac App Store is convenient and familiar. However, the Setapp Standalone store is a fantastic alternative for specific situations:
- Enterprise and Managed Environments: Many corporate or educational environments restrict access to the Mac App Store or prevent users from logging in with personal Apple IDs. Setapp provides a clean, professional alternative to acquire necessary tools without needing an Apple account.
- Supporting Alternative Storefronts: If you prefer to support independent software storefronts and curation over Apple’s centralized ecosystem, Setapp is an excellent choice.
What about the rest of the Suite?
Right now, USB Connection Information is the only app from the Connection Information Suite available on the Setapp store.
Our other utilities — Audio Connection Information, Display Connection Information, and Network Connection Information — remain exclusive to the Mac App Store for the time being.
The Connection Information team looks forward to continuing our relationship with the Setapp, and we will evaluate bringing the rest of our suite to the platform in the future.
